A mechanical booster vacuum pump, also known as a roots blower or roots vacuum pump, is a high-capacity device used to increase the performance of primary vacuum pumps by rapidly evacuating large volumes of gas. It operates using two synchronized lobed rotors that rotate in opposite directions without contact, trapping and moving gas from the inlet to the outlet. While it cannot start at atmospheric pressure and must be used alongside backing pumps, its ability to deliver high pumping speeds in the medium and low vacuum ranges makes it ideal for applications such as vacuum coating, metallurgy, chemical processing, and semiconductor manufacturing, where faster evacuation times and improved efficiency are essential.
